Weight Neutral Wellness

Weight neutral wellness is one of the key aspects of my practice. “Weight neutral” means that a patient’s weight is not the focus of our visits or our treatment plans. It means that I see you as a whole person, not just a number on a scale, a BMI, or a waist size. Weight neutral medicine takes the focus off weight so we can get down to business on improving your actual health. To this end, I use principles of Health at Every Size and Intuitive Eating in my practice.

How many times have you felt shamed, unheard, or disrespected by a doctor? Lots of people in big bodies have felt these same feelings. Many times, people in big bodies receive worse healthcare than those in thinner bodies. As a person in a big body myself, I can understand how hard it can be to trust a doctor but it is my goal to build meaningful therapeutic relationships with my patients in bigger bodies.

I have extensive experience working with patients with bigger bodies to optimize their health. I offer a continuing education workshop on creating a weight inclusive practice to help educate other natural medicine providers on how to work with people in bigger bodies in a respectful way. I have also lectured on body positive, weight-neutral medicine and the dangers of weight bias, weight stigma in medicine at the Food As Medicine Institute and Naturopathic Medical Students Association Annual Conference.

At some point in their lives, most Americans have tried to change their diet to improve their health or lose weight. For many people, knowing which foods to choose, how to prepare them, and how to exercise are a major source of confusion and frustration. For many people, dieting has often been a lifelong pursuit that has negatively impacted their relationship with food and their bodies.

I want to change the way you see food and the way you see your body. Food is fuel, and we need the proper balance of nutrients for our bodies to work optimally, but food is about more than just fueling our bodies. It’s also related to our cultures, our communities, our comfort, and our celebrations. I work with patients to incorporate all these aspects of food into their nutrition plans. I want to help you learn to love healthy food and incorporate it into a balanced diet that isn’t restrictive.
